NO MONOPOLY.

/To the Editor of the Star.)

SIR,-In your contemporary of this date, I

hare read an account of the proceedings of the meeting of farmers held at the Mount Blowhard Hotel ; the object being to raise the price of farm produce in the Ballarat

market.

The Chairman stated that the farmers around Melbourne .'had succeeded to some extent in their endeavors, by appointing au agent to classify their hay and fix a price upon it, holding over whatever number of loads that remained unsold at that figure. It remains to be proved, how this method of compelling the trade to purchase at the farmers own valuation will work on Ballarat.

I differ with bim in reference to what ha said about commission agents, on whom he throws the blame of the present low prices, and had the audacity to charge them with I sacrificing the interests of their employers-to ' effect sales rather than lose their commission, i This I believe to be false, and comes with bad I grace from one of the party that the. agent is

bound to protect.

It is well known that were it not for the

agents produce would be sold at mush lower rates than is obtained for it at present, and that their removal from the market would be just what the storekeepers should like,as they would then have a better opportunity of pur* chasing ou their own terms. The supply being greatly in excess of the demand is the cause of the.present low prices whicti, after all, will stand a fair comparison with either Geelong ur Melbourne marketa.

Mr Ress volunteered another grata'tous in-Bult to the agents by charging them with underselling each other,. which is as false as it is ridiculous. He ought to know that no farmer is obliged to employ an agent if he

does not wish to do so.

The idea of appointing a committee of far-mers to ride an open market is just aa absurd js it ù impracticable,; in fact, the meeting was a complete farce, and, were it not for the 'polishing tbs press gave their jargon,' they

themselves would be ashamed to see it in print.

I am, sir, yours, &c., &c_
