rated Brick».-Some experiments have lately been made at the engineering establishment of Messrs John Rowan & Sons, Belfast, aa the comparative sustaining powers of Bearfs patent perforated bricks, and bricks of the ordinary kind. In each case a pier of four courses of the bricks to be tested was bnflt, in Roman cement, on the table of a powerful hydraulic press, and allowed at least twentyfour hours to set thoroughly. A light scale board was suspended to the safety valve lever of the press, in which were placed successive weights, until the pier of bricks on the table

of the press was crushed. The number of 1 weights was increased a quarter of a pound st a time (being equivalent to an increment of 10 tons on the press), commencing at 30 toss -this starting point being the effect doe to the united weight of the lever and tba scaleboard. The pump was worked very slowly to eliminate the concussion produced otherwise by the inertia of the water. The first experiment was made with good ordinary bricks in a pier of 18 inches square, built m four courses. This showed symptoms of failing with 110 tons, and was crashed with 150 tons. A pier of the same dimensions of perforated bricks began to crack with 270 tons,

and was crushed with 350 tons. Sir John McNeil having expressed a desire to witness a repetition of these experiments, at his request a pier bf nine inches square of each kind cf bricks was built in cement, in four courses as before, and with especial care to have Cbs joints as thin as possible. The common bricks failed with 40 tons, whereas the pier of patent bricks sustained 120 lons before it was crashed. Reducing the results of these experiments to the

effect upon a superficial foot, common bricks, ' in the first experiment, were crushed by sbrfjv six two-third tons to the square foot, and by seventy-one one-ninth tons in the _econd ; the mean being 68-8-9 tons. The patent perforated bricks were crushed in the first experiment by 155.5-9 tons per superficial foot, and in the second by 213-1-3 tons ; the mean being 184*-4-9 tons : showing a result in favor of tibe . compressed perforated brick of no less than 110 tons.-Taken frew, the Cambridge Rte Preis._
