SPORTING NOTES. FOOTBALL. FITZROY v. COLLINGWOOD. This match attracted a fair number of onlookers, and although -the ground was very wet a good even game was played by both teams. Fitzroy were handicapped by the absence of several of their leading players, whilst Hickey played ender great disadvantage. T. Beecham, brother to the dodgy bowler of the Cricket Club, played a very fair opening game, being quick and smart. In the final quarter it at one time appeared as if Fitzroy were to repeat their dashing finishes of last season, but the good defensive work of Monaghan was effective. and when the bell rang Fitzroy were 3 goals bad. Cleary at this stage had the ball from a mark and with a fine kick, fully 80 yards, he notched a goal. The wind was blowing in the direction of the kick. McEwan played a fine game half-back, and the centre line, Drohan, Clarke and Robinson held their own, the former doing very good work. Clarke did not kick often enough. The half-forwards were weak, time after time allowing Monaghan to mark and return the ball centrewards. The final result wasCollingwood, 5 goals, 7 behinds; Fitzroy, 3 goals 7 behinds.
