DEATH . OF DR..I USSELL':[ I It is with sincereo- regret we have to announce the: death of Dr. Russell, though the news.will not fall- unexpect edly on the ears of many of our readers. For many months.. the deceased gentle-man has been unable to leave his house, or even his bed, except at rare intervals. During, the past weeks he rallied, and his recovery was expected, but during the last few days he again relapsed, and ex pired at about halt' past five o'clock p.m. yesterday. Dr Russell. was one of the oldest residents in Belfast, having arrived here in 1847. He followed his profession with considerable success up to 1857, when he paid a visit to the old country, from which he returned' in 1859. Having previously relinquished his pro fession, he embarked in mercantile specu-lations and built the now celebrated Moyne Mill, the machinery of which he purchased during his visit to Scotland. In 1856, on the establishment of mnuni. cipalitica II- .VioctLui,-Dr- Ituasll was elected first Mayor of Belfast, and in 1861 he contested. successfully,; the con stitueoiny of Villiers and Hlytosbury,' having been elected with Mr. Duffy, by a majority of 40 over Mr Rutledge. In 1861 a severe ilness obliged him to re linguish his Parliamentary. duties, and from that titheo his health has not been permanently restored. Dr Russell was a man of considerable, ability, and was an active, influential, and consistent pol itican. In every movement for the ad vancement of the interests of the town, he took a leading part, and his purse was never closed against the calls of charity. His recent enterprise was not successful in a pecuniary point of view, and the circumstances no doubt preyed on his mind and accelerated his death. - With Dr Russell another of the worthy pioneers of the distriot: has passed away, May he rest in peace l-Belfast Gazette Nov 28.
