NEWJ YEA'"S DAY The greatest local event of the New Year's advent, was the sports on the cricket ground. The return match was played, between the Foresters and the Portland Club. ' he Club proved the winner, we subjoin the: score. After the finish of the game a number of footraces were improvised, and the sport was kept up with great spirit till the shades ofevening, began to close in. If to the games of amusement we add the anxiety attending the e!ections, and the enquiries made as to the successful candidates, the New Year of 1866 will be long regarded as memorable in our Victorian annals. About the middle of the day. we published a telegram of the result of the elections, which, with the exception of Blair for Normanby, which should have been Levey, we believe iscorrect. This telegram of the result, the Western Times published without acknowledgment m the issue of Tuesday, but as the matter was of such moment to the public, we can afford to pardon the appropriation.
