Obituary. With dep regret we record the passing away of one of our oldest residents in the person of Mr. Alexander Dawkins, of South Portland, at the age of 75 years. Deceased, who was a native of Portland, had resided here all his life, carrying on mixed farming, until sickness of such a nature prevented him from continuing. Medical advice was sought, but this proved of no avail, and he gradually became worse and pased away as stated. He, with many others, attended :,bo,l in Ihe house over the swamp known as "Beulah." He was married in the year 1888 to Miss Georgina Miller, and two children were born of this unon, Gertrude May (Mrs. Beanles, of South Portland) and Percy. His first wife predeceased him 20 years ago. He was later married in Portland to Miss Emma Jane Wells in 1906, there being one daughter of the marriage, Verna (Mrs. Brooks, of South Portland). To the bereaved relatives we extend our deepest sympathy. The remains were laid to rest in the Baptist portion of the South, cemetery on Sunday afternoon last, there being a large assembly of friends to pay tribute to one so dear and respected by all. The service at the house and graveside was conducted by the Rev. Wk. 0. Ward, while the . mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. B. L. Wilkin. " It is with great regret that we have to record the sudden death of Miss Constance McLeod,. well known and highly respected in Portland and the surrounding district, which occurred on Friday at Hamilton (New Zealand). The sadness of the tragic-event is deepened by the fact that Miss McLeod, with her sister, had left for Portland to attend the Centenary celebrations, and had only got a short distance when she was seized by a sudden illness, which resulted in her untimely death. The late lady was a- native of Portland, being born at "Maretimo," and s a membdr of. one of - the oldest and most respected families of the Western District. Mr. H. MacLeod, of "Castlemaddie," where Miss. Constance had been residing prior to her visit to New Zealand, a year or so ago, is a nephew. The death of Mr. Robt. Carr, a well known resident of Narrawong, has occurred.
