A VIOLENT WOMAN

SUFFRAGETTE RELEASED FROM

GAOL.

LONDON. May 11.

Mary Wood, the suffragette who last week slashed a portrait in the gallery of the Royal Academy, has been released from gaol on license, owing to the weak condi-tion of her health, brought on by hungerstriking.

Last week an elderly woman. Mary Wood, invaded the Academy Exhibition, and with a chopper slashed in three places Sargent's portrait of Mr. Henry James, the well-known author, one of the most notable pictures in the Academy. The damage was estimated at £200. Bystanders fur-nishing an account of the incident stated that they saw a white-haired women stop in front of Sargent's picture for a few mo- ments. Suddenly she pulled a butcher's cleaver from her muff, smashed the glass with the first blow, and then made several gashes in the canvas. Thereupon some of the onlookers seized the woman and handed her over to the police. Many ladies who witnessed the affair cried, "Lynch her." Aman who expressed svmpathv with the suf-fragettes was severely hustled by the crowd until the police rescued him. The por-trait was recently presented to Mr. James in commemoration of his 70th birthday. ,

An extraordinarv scone was caused by a suffragette at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden tonight, during a gala performance in honor of the visit of the King of Denmark to England. King George and his Royal guests were listen-

ing to the performance, when suddenly a woman in the balcony stalls shouted. "King George, women are being tortured

in vour dominions.''

The weman was seized and roughly handled by the crowd. Finally ehe was carried from the building shrieking. Meanwhile other suffragettes seated in the gallery, showered leaflets on the audi-ence below.
