First Issue, August 20, 1842. -o With which is incorporated Vic ýtortland futror. -0 at Portland Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Evening. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1912. HELP THE HOSPITAL.-It is pleasing to find the residents of Heywood have made a spontaneous move to assist the Portland Cottage Hospital in the form of a substantial supply of eggs. The Secretary of the Hospital, Mr W. Stevens, received the following letter from Mr J. J. Barclay, the hon. secretary of the Heywood Poultry Club, and which we make public by request: I am forwarding you per train today, October 16, 30 dozen eggs for the hospital." The eggs were collected by the members of the Heywood Poultry Club, and I trust they will reach you in good order." Residents of other towns are helping their hospitals by a similar movement, and great rivalry appears to exist between the residents of Warrnambool and Geelong as to which town will receive the greater number of eggs for their respective hospitals. We shall be pleased to acknowledge donations in aid of the Portland Hospital, and should it be desired, take the charge of the eggs temporarily. ENTERTAIN3IENT.- As announced in our advertising columns, deaf, dumb, and blind entertainers are to visit Portland, on Monday, October 28, and as most of us are already acquainted with this unique and talented company, something good may be expected. Mr Tainch, an old favorite will be heard in some of his best items, whilst his illustrated songs are always a feature of the programme. Mr Anderson, a master of the violin and piano will give selections on these instruments and his musical sketch showing what can be done with the piano in case of emergency, is in itself worth the price of admission, As is usual with this company they keep thoroughly up to date, carrying with them one of the finest bioscopes and some of the latest films, will be exhibited including modern picture dramas, fascinating picture comedies, industries of the world, and some pleasing comic studies. We can heartily recommend this company to the public, not only for the reason that these afflicted are so creditably helping themselves but on account of the high merits of the entertainment. S. STEPHEN'S.-The members of the congregation are reminded that the annual appeal on behalf of the Home Mission Fund is now being made, and that the household envelopes for the household offerings are being posted this week to the heads of households. Canon Carmichael requests that the envelopes be returned to the vicarage not later than Saturday, the 16th November. Every penny contributed will be devoted to struggling parishes and districts in our own diocese. The need of support is great. Out of 76 parishes and districts in the diocese, 45 are in receipt of grants from the Home Mission Fund, and if these grants were not made, the ministrations of the Church would be no longer possible in those 45 cases. LEAvnGc PORLAND.-Mr J. J. Gerraty. who has been chief engineer at Messrs. Borthwick's Freezing Works here for some time, has been appointed to the charge of the new electric lighting plant at Koroit, which has been installed by the Borough Council at that place. There were 37 applications for the position, which is worth £182 per annum with the right of successful applicant to outside practice. Mr Gerratv was popular while here, and we wish him success in his new home. METHODIST CHURCH. -On Sunday evemng next, an "In memoriam" service will be conducted by the Rev. J. Adams, having reference to the decease of the late Mrs W. Poland, one of the oldest members of the Church as well as one of the oldest residents of our town. A.W.N. LEAGUE.-The members of the local branch of the above are elsewhere required to attend a meeting on Tuesday, the 22nd., at 3,30, at the usual place,

ASSIST THE HOSPITAL. - The Portland A.N.A. minstrels gave an entertainment at Heywood on Wednesday night in aid of the Portland Cottage Hospital.
