THE WILD SCOTCHMAN.

THIS desperado, whose misdeeds has so often been reported in our columns, who is said to be a native New South Wales, is at present confined in Brisbane gaol, on a series of charges of mail robberies and other offences under arms. M'Pherson, better known by the sobriquet

of the Wild Scotchman, is a young man of good education, who appears to have taken to the roads more through love of adventure than from compulsion. He first got into trouble in this colony, and was arrested in the northern part of Queensland. When being brought down to Rockhampton he managed to effect his escape from the constable, and

was soon after brought into notice by the audacity with which he repeatedly

robbed the mails and his success in elud-ing the police; by which he had, on one occasion, the impudence to for-ward to his Excel-lency Sir George Bowen, cheques to the amount of £1700, which were part of the plunder obtained by various mail rob-

beries. M'Pherson's capture is due, not to the police, but to the promptitude and bravery of Mr. Nott, superintendent of the Mundooran sta-tion, who, hearing that the robber was in the vicinity, at once went in pur-suit, and captured him. Our engrav-ing is from a photo-graph taken in the gaol.
