THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

ELECTIONS.

NOMINATION DAY.

MR. COPPIN RETURNED UNOPPOSED

FOR THE MELBOURNE PROVINCE.

The nominations for the six additional seats in the Legislative Council, created by the amending Electoral Act of last session, closed yesterday. These elections are the outcome of the scheme of electoral reform submitted to the past Parliament by the Government, which increased the number of members in the Legislative Assembly from 86 to 95, destroyed the proportion of two members of the popular Chamber to one of the Legislative Council, established by the Constitution Act and rendered necessary a new measure to restore the proportion. The Government accordingly submitted a bill to add a member each to the Melbourne, North Yarra, South Yarra, North-Western, Southern, and South-Eastern electorates re- spectively. In committee, however, an alteration was made in the schedule, and the names of the Gippsland, Northern, and Wel-lington provinces substituted for the South-Eastern, North Yarra, and Southern pro-vinces. The date of the election was fixed by the statute for September 12. The popu-lation of the Melbourne Province is stated by the officers of the Chief Secretary's depart-ment to be 89,264 and the number of electors 16,718, and the figures with regard to the others are -South Yarra Province, popula-tion 77,274, electors 17,652; Northern Pro-vince, population 72,160, electors 8,501; Wel-

lington, population 76,418, electors 8,169; Gippsland, population 42,404, electors 8,337; and North-Western, population 58,883, electors 10,729.
