WELLINGTON.

The weather here has been remarkably dry for the last four months, and the stock are suffering much for want of grass and water. At a great many stations on the back creeks, the water has failed, so that the stock are greatly crowded on the rivers. We have had light frost several mornings

lately, and during the heat of the day the thermo-meter stood at 79° in the shade. The weather is de-lightfully pleasant as one could wish, but every-thing shows the need for rain. We have had ac-counts from the Lower Macquarie which state that the grass is exceedingly scarce, and the river in many places dry for miles. A man named Robert Quanto was brought be-for the Bench, charged with being found on the premises of E. B. Cornish, Esq., Nanima, at an unseasonable hour and under suspicious circum-stances. Their worships awarded him six months in Bathurst gaol, under the Vagrant Act. GOLD.—For some years past reports has been circulated respecting the discovery of gold in the neighbourhood of Wellington. There is no doubt that small portions of the [precious metal?] have been found. We have seen a [piece about the?] size of a small pea, which was recently [found and?] other small portions, near Burrendong [?] pro-

nounced by competent judges to be the real thing. Neither is there any doubt in the fact that Mr. McGregor found a considerable quantity of the pre-cious metal some years ago, near Mitchell's Creek, and it is surmised he still gets more in the same lo-cality. We have heard of several gold seekers coming from other quarters in search of their idol, but none, of them were successful in discovering gold. Several specimens of copper and lead have been picked up, and it is to be hoped that our dis-trict will yet prove a rich one in mines and miner-als, as it is not likely, from the aridity of the climate, to be very productive as an agricultural district. May 14th.— This day the adjourned meeting of magistrates was held for the purpose of considering the applications for Publicans' Licenses, and the following persons received the usual certificates : — Mr. James Toy, Blackrock, Newrea Alexander Ferguson, ditto, ditto Alexander White, Montefiores Joseph Matthews, ditto M. O'Shea, ditto Henry Butler, Three Rivers. The weather still continues dry, with the excep-tion of a light shower on the evening of the 10th.
