INTEE-'VARSITY LACROSSE. ADELAIDE DEFEATED EASILY. MELBOURNE, August 26. The Melbourne University scored, an unexpectedly easy win on the University Oval this afternoon against Adelaide, in the opening game of the inter-university lacrosse matches. Both teams were stronger than for some time, and the result was expected to be close. The Adelaide University, which has won the local minor premiership, had in the team three of the star* (Yuill, Wagstaff, and Holder) of the recent successful interstate team winch beat Victoria so badly a fortnight ago, and local followers were keen to bee these men. in action. Yuill had not much opportunity to show his prowess, in goal, and the form, of the other pair was hardly up to expectations. Melbourne had mteistate representatives in Wnxon, Laughlin, Doyle, and Russell, and each of them has hardly ever been seen to greater advantage than in this game. Melbourne forced the pace from the 'face-oft,' and its superiority ?» as quickly manifest. The tactics of theteams' were in gieat contrast to that of the recent game. The system was seen on the Victorian side. Adelaide relied largely on individual efforts, which the solid Melbourne defence invariably frustrated when within striking distance The Melbourne team as a whole worked like machmerj. The combination play right down the field ?was perfect, and every man on the side at one time or another did great work. Russell was in fine form, and his fast rushes down the field demoralized the opposing' backs. 'Asche, Bodycomb, and Doyle were also pait.eularlj 'noLiceaole m staving off the opposing forwards, and each did good work Laughlin at cjntre had all the better of Wagstaff. He plajed with all the dash ind judgment which made his practice games so attractive. Wrixon, Hamilton, and Trumble were the pick of the joraard division, liach w'-as above the average. Their combinat. On play at times waa delightful to watch, and their stick work hard to -beat in any com

pany: Tie Adelaide teams lorm must oe comessed as disappointing The men worked hard enough, but their efforts were wasted owing to their lack or sjstem, more particularly on the forward lines, where the r play was in great contract to that of the Melbourne team Yuill, Rcnnie, Holder, and Wagstaff were some of their oest The goalgetters were Millhouse, Yuill, Vercoe, and. Godfrey. The Melbourne goals were scored by Laughlin (3). Trumble (2), and Russell (2). Hamilton, Wrixon, and Read. The. first quarter was marked by. .?'? . an, unfortunate - accident to the Melbourne goalkeeper (L. Hurbey), which necessitated his retirement from the game. The referee (Mr. II. E. Poole) equalized the sides bv ordering the retirement of the Adelaide keeper (Yuill). This action of the referee caused much adverse criticism, but was perfectly legitimate. It was, of course, distinctly unfortunate 'for Adelaide, although it could not have altered the result. Abbott took Yuill's place in goal, and J. Williams occupied the Melbourne net, and did .remarkably well in that position. The captains having agreed to continue with full teams Yuill was subsequently played in defence, and Trumble filled the vacancy on the Melbourne side. The final result was:— Mel-bourne, 11 goals; Adelaide, 4- goals. The game to-morrow will be between Adelaide and Sjdney
