RAGING REFLECTIONS

According- to the Sydney horseman, J. King, who recently returned home, his first mount in England was in a lield of 42 two-yeax-olds at Newbury.

* » » F. Bullock, -who is returning to Australia shortly, when interviewed by the representative of a Sydney paper, expressed sorrow at having to retire from race riding. However, he said five heavy falls in a few years had shaken his nerve, and he feels a long rest necessary. He was unable to say too much for sportsmen in England, and contemplated returning to that country as a tralne'r. Chatting about jockeys, he remarked that Steve Donoghue was the best he had ever seen. Sprints or long races, slugs or two-year-olds, all came the same to Steve, but he thought his many successes in the Derby were due to good judgment in picking his mounts more than to special ability on the Epsom course. * ? * Bullock places Saucy Sue, Picaroon, Sun-in-Law, and Buchan among the best horses he has ridden, and if that idea is correct. Picaroon should do well next year. Bullock has no intention of doing any riding on his return to Australia. Be admits that our sharper turns and shorter straights do not appeal to him after England's long straight runs, which make for fairer riding, and -give any horse a, winning chance if it is good enough. * * ? Discussing remuneration, Bullock said that once a jockey is established in England he can make much more than in Australia, conseouent on their being so many rich owner*. * ? ? After having been defeated in her two previous races. Saucy Sue won the Atalanta Stakes of £1.260, at. Sandown Park la October. She carried 9 7, and leading all the way, beat ? five other fillies in the slow time of 2.80 2-5 for a mile and a quarter. Saucy Sue was a short-priced favorite, the best .price going agaisst her being 11 to 10. She will probably go to the stud during the coming year. Saucy Sue's two season's racing have given Xx-rd Astor about £25,000 in stakes. * , - * . ? . ? ? . * Lady Woo, winner of the Champagne Stakes. at the Q.T.C. (Brisbane) meeting on. Saturday last, is certainly bred to «o fast. She- is by Woorak from Molly's Robe, winner of a. Newmarket and an Oakleigh Plate.' and -if feuch' a mating failed to produce e speedy. gal-loper, it is difficult to. say what would. Lady .Woo is .the first of Molly's Bobe's progeny,- and, that mare was subsequently mated' with Chantemerle, and Seremond. « ? - * Kanooka, wihich looked rather light before she went out for the Kirkhaen Stakes, was sufficiently knocked out by her run to suggest, that It was no use persevering with her . with a view ito running in the ^December Stakes. She has «ince been sent to her owner's place at Lei6hhardt, and will be spelled for some time. -?» ? ??* '? ? ♦ Runny meae has arrived from New Zealand, and be. is on the small side. His deeds prove him good, and Mr. T C. Trautwein may have no cause to repent the reported price of 5,000 guU neas^and a. contingency of 1,000 gaiaea*. Runnymede has been sent to Maifcland for a few1 weeks' spell prior to starting1 iiis preparation for the autumn. His New Zealand record is as follows:— At two years— three firsts, five seconds, one third: and unplaced four tunes. At' three years— Four firsts, one second, no thirds or unplaced. Total: — Seven wins, six seconds, one third, and four times unplaced. . .._?'.? So far Runnymede'a earning* total £4,320. GRANDMOTHER STILL RACING . .. . Thelma's Romantic Career At a Brighton (Eng.) meeting in Octoljer the Selling Handicap, five furlongs and 66 .vards. was won by the 10-year-old mare Tbelma, who is a Krandmother. She has had two foals, and is the grandmother of two. - ? Apparently Thelma has had a. rather romantic career. She was foaled in 3915, and four years later gave birth to a bay colt by Primer. The name of that colt gives rise to speculation, for it vres called Premature. A year later Thehna foaled a bay or brown filly to Blink, and was put to Oliver Goldsmith. A re cent issue of * The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News' (Eng.) states that Thelma is 'in training. again after two separate spells of stud life.' Thehna is related to the Kiora stallion Nassau (by William the Third from Stolen Love), for .she was bred by the Duke of Portland and was got by Thrush from Light o' Love, by Itadium out of Stolen Love, by Buccaneer It was a coincidence that Thelma's daughter Elma, by Blink, is- now at the 'Kiora stud, for she was recently imported by Mr. P. Miller. Thelma did not race last year, nor in 1921 and 1923.. In 1922 she started seven tunes, and won Dover Mid-weight Plate, five furlongs (19 runners) and Alexandra Park July Handicap, five furlongs (11 runners). In 1921 she ran twice over hurdles, and six times on the flat, winning five4urlong races at Warwick (15 runners, including T&grag), Gatwick (nine runners), and Newbury ill runners).
