VENO AND ALICE HAWTHORN.

Wo yesterday paid a visit lo tito stables of Mr Green, at Emerald Hill, and were favoured with a sight of tho champion mn.re in bcr_ comfortable now box. recently erected on Mr GreenVown premises, wliero she can bo kept almost as secure os if she wcro under charge of Go-vernor Wintle in his more substantial structure. Tho maro was looking ns well as her warmest friends could desire, and as furwnrd in her preparation ns her must judicious partisans would have her at this period of

time.

During tho last few days it appeared as if either the

backers of the horse have somewhat reduced their stock of

confidence in their prospects, or the mare's party bare be-come stronger; anyhow, tho odds haro now settled down nt about 5 to 4 on Veno, and his friends do not appear very noxious to invest nt that price ?

Wo have been informed that thc horse has not been "doing" well for the last fow days; but this nmy turn out to bo only "a weak invention ol' thc enemy."-Jiell's Life in f'icloria, August 22.
