HELMSDALE.

That part of Glenelg known as Helms dale has made considerable strides during the last six months with new buildings. Regret is expressed that when a new portion is being laid out in any municipality for residential purposes and the plans deposited with the council, provision is not made by the corporation with the original owners for forming and making the necessaiy roads and footpaths, as otherwise the cost has to be borne by the abutting proprietors, in addition to their ordinary rates. A vigilance committee was recently formed in Helmsdale, with Mr. J. F. Murphy as Secretary. Already they have induced the council to have the electric light installed; have petitioned the corporation to have the necessary surveys prepared for the roads and footpaths; and have secured the extension of the deep drainage. Much, however, remains to be done to bring the eastern portion of the town into line with the other parts, but the commitee are hopeful, with the co operation of the council, to see this accomp ished in the near future.
