Passing of

Sir Chas.

McNess

SIR CHARLES McNESS, whom

people came to know as "Western Australia's Lord Nuffield," died early on Wednesday at the home of his son, Mr. H. F. McNess, Woodroyd street, Mt. Lawley.

Born at Huntingdon, England, in 1853, the late Sir Charles McNess came to Western Australia in the early eighties. A keen business man it was not long before he made a success of an ironmongery and tinsmithing ven-ture in a building at the corner of Barrack and Hay streets, and later ex-

tending his activities to real estate and

other investments, he accumulated a large fortune.

A great slice out of that fortune has gone to charities in this and other States of the Commonwealth, and even England.

The benefactions of Sir Charles commenced during the war when many deserving bodies gratefully received substantial donations.

Outside recognition of his philan-thropy came in June, 1931, when he was made a Knight Bachelor, and his monetary gifts continued almost to the time of his death. The money has gone to help many worthy causes in all parts of the State.

His benefactions amounted to some-where near £150,000.

LATE SIR CHARLES McNESS

Western Australia's noted philanthro-

pist, who died on Wednesday last.
