SYDNEY, FRIDAY.

The City of Adelaide arrived from Auck-land this morning with the Californian

mails.

The Cyphrenes arrived at Auckland from San Francisco on the 14th inst, and transhipped her mails to the City of Ade

laide.

The following is the passenger list Mrs." Andrews, Mrs. Gleeson, Misses Hallam, Messrs. Andrews, Donkin, Thompson, Bowler, Parbury, Savage, Stokes, Richmond, Macquarie, Dalton, Jones, Robertson, Clarke, Wilshire, and 24 in the steerage.

The Macgregor, on her outward voyage from Sydney, encountered a fearful gale, and had her decks swept. She waited two days at Kandavu for the New Zealand mails, and left on the 14th.

The Tartar touched on the Thorndike Reef on' her passage to Honolulu, and remained grounded for two days. She, however, sustained no damage.

The following are the leading items of intelligence brought by the Cyphrenes :

LONDON, JUNE 16.

The Ascot Races began to-day. The Ascot Stakes were won by Coventry. Ten horses ran. Leolinua won the Prince of Wales Stakes, Atlantic second, Lemons third. Organist won the Gold Vase, Montargia second, Lilian third.

Sir Charles Fox, the celebrated engineer,

is dead.

QUEENSTOWN, JUNE 16.

On the arrival of the Parthia from New York, an excited mob gathered, and hooted and hissed M. Rochefort, who, but for the protection of the police, would have been lynched. The mob made a rush for him, but

did not reach him.

LONDON, JUNE 17.

On the second day of the Ascot Races, the Royal Hunt Cup was won by Lowlander, Maid of Perth second. Apology won the Coronation Stakes, Blanche Fleur second. Atlantic won the Ascot Derby, Clairvoyant second. Lemons won the Ascot Biennial Stakes, Spectator second, Couronne de Fer third.

Sir Stephen Glynne, brother-in-law of Mr. Gladstone, is dead. Mr. W. H. Gladstone, son of the ex-Premier, inherits the estate of the deceased.

Rochefort was recognised in Dublin, and hissed.

Professor Goldwin Smith sailed for New York to-day.

LONDON, JUNE 18.

At the Ascot Races to-day Leolinus won the St. James's Palace Stakes, Ecossais second, Aquila third. Cambyses won the New Biennial Stakes, Tipster second, The Colonel third. Bayard won the Gold Cup, Doncaster and Flageolet running a dead heat for second place.

The Earl of Yarborough, who had been missing, was discovered in Jersey. He left to-day for London, in charge of his friends and the police.

The Pall Mall Gazette says that the success of the Congress on International Law, convened at Brussels, is very doubtful. England, France, and Austria raise objections to the scheme, and Switzerland extends to it but slight support.

The now steamship Montana, on her first voyage to New York, returned disabled.

PARIS, JUNE 16.

Copies of the New York Herald containing Rochefort's letter written on his arrival in New York have been seized, on account of the attack made in the letter on Marshal MacMahon.

The wife of Don Carlos has arrived, en route for Switzerland.

The Spanish Government is negotiating with the Credit Mobilier for a loan of 50,000,000 of reals.

Cardinal Antonelli is suffering from a severe attack of gout.

Inn light at Algiers, 37 Moorish insurgents were killed by French troops, who had six killed and ten wounded.

PANAMA, June 17.

President Barrios, of Guatemala, has ordered that Commandant Gonzales be shot on the score of criminal disobedience of the military laws of the republic, No ill feeling exists between the English viceconsul Magee and the Government.

HAArANNAH, JUNE 10.

It is asserted that the Marquis Santa Lucia has been deposed from the presidency of the insurgent party, and that General Gomez has been appointed as his successor.

LISBON, JUNE 19.

The mail steamer from Rio Janeiro brings intelligence that the yellow fever had broken out in Ballina, and was raging with great

violence.

BREMEN, JUNE 20.

A banquet was given to-day in honour of the agricultural exhibitors. The Crown Prince of Germany, Frederick William, was present, and made a speech in reply to the toast of "The Emperor."

AMERICAN COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE

New York advices report that the Carlorou had sailed for Melbourne with 150,000 gallons of kerosene and 50 packages tobacco.

Kerosene was dull and quotations unaltered.

Wool was in demand ; sales of Port Phillip at 55s. to 57s.

Latest Californian advices state that the new wheat had commenced arriving, and sales had been made at l.GSdol. ; oats, infidel. to 75deg. An order is in the market for ROO tons for Australia.

The steamer Prince Alfred was totally wrecked a few miles from San Francisco all on board were saved.
