Mr. F. J. Sweetman, accompanied by his daughter, returned to Perth by the Cathay last Tuesday after a visit

to Bombay.

Now on her way to America by the Mari po Ba ls Miss Dorothy Duncklev, who is bound for Hollywood to study the latest methods in screen make-up. Miss Dunckley was make-up expert to Cinesound, and acted in a double ca-pacity in The Squatter's Daughter," the Cinesound film, in which she not only played a comedy role but also made up her fellow players. While away she Intends to discover whether .'realism" in American films is realism and not just make-believe. Miss Dunckley will be remembered in Perth for her work in the early Repertory Club day». She also appeared in Perth with the Betty Ross Clarke Co. in "The Ghost Train" and other plays.

At the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. C. Wood, of 268 Charles-street. North Perth, a.large number of friends for-gathered at Keough's Hall to celebrate the coming of age of their-eldest daughter. Dorothy. Dancing and competitions were enjoyed, and at supper the usual toasts were honored, and the guest of honor cut the cake.

terminated a happy evening.

Mrs. Tregpnning, of Claremont, is enjoying a fortnight's holiday at Roleystone.

Station House, Laverton, was the scene of a happy gathering. When Mrs. Leonard invited the ladies of the dis-trict to meet Mrs. Fisher (who ls on a trip from Ireland) and Mrs. Love, of Fremantle. Music passed the after-noon very happily, and an advertise-ment competition was won by Mrs. Tom Harris, with Mrs. Fisher second. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and the lounge was a bower of sweet peas, which were sent in by Mrs. Brockman, of White Cliffs. Those present were: Mesdames Fisher, Love, Ideally, Hurd. Harris, Holland, Lambert.. Finder, Bateman, Matron Hart, Mitchell, and Purdy.

A -meeting and social gathering of the R.SX. women's auxiliary of Gwalia, was held at the- residence of Mrs. C. Valentine, sen, on Thursday. August 24, the object being to discuss the desirability of forming ' a

Claremont was celebrated at St. Michael and AU Saints* Church. Hen-ley Beach, S JL, when Miss Jean Christie, daughter ot Mr. A, J. Christie, of ' Kangaroo Island, and niece of Mrs. A.* McCarthy, late of Princess-road, Claremont, was' mar-ried to Mr. John C. Buchanan, of Swanbourne. The bride wore a grace-ful frock of white crinkled morceau, the usual wreath and tulle veû, and carried a bouquet of roses. Her. bridesmaids were Miss Margery Christie and Miss Lesley Christie, who wore pretty gowns of apple green and apricot crinkled morocain respectively, and turbans to-»tone. The best man was Mr. Bert Buchanan, and groomsman Mr. Don Gremshaw. The reception was held at The Kiosk. . Henley Beach, where about sixty guests were enter-tained. The bride and bridegroom left for Victor Harbor for the honeymoon, and arrived last Monday by Trans, train to make their home In'W.A.

A programme of solos and bright ensembles was presented by the Sun-shine Merrymakers' Company at King's Hall, Subiaco, last Thursday , in aid of the local Soccer Football Club. Each item was well -received and the show , went with a swing. The soloists were Misses .Mamie Jones, Gwen Ellis, and Faith Musakahn, and Messrs.. S. Greenwood, F. Harmer, W. Eayrs, W. Briggs. Geo. An engagement of much interest re-cently announced from Melbourne is that of Elaine B. Varee, che daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Brett, of South Tarra, Melbourne, to Mr. T. B. Mit-chell, the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Mitchell, of The Wil-lows, Bunbury. Mr. Mitchell left this State during the month to reside in

Victoria.

An enjoyable dance was held at Keough's Hall last Tuesday in aid of the Maylands Roman Catholic Church. Despite the weather there was a large number of young people present who spent a happy evening dancing to bright music of Charles Sheridan's or-chestra. The success of the affair was due to the untiring efforts of the hon. secretary. Miss Keough, and her ener-getic committee.

A band of ladies from the Methodist Church, Bunbury, journeyed to Har-vey and presented an excellent concert to a full house. The concert had been gi -en in Bunbury previously, and a ? considerable sum of money was raised

in both towns in the interest of the Methodist Church. The visitors were entertained to "high tea" and supper and the Rev. Victor Deakin thanked the organiser, Mrs. A. H. Boult«- and , her company for their help.
