Burial of a dog hero

Mail London Office

Rex, an 11 -year-old Alsatian dog who won the Dickin Medal (the animal's VC) for saving airraid victims in London's wartime blitz, has died.

He was buried in the animal cemetery at Ilford. Essex, near the first cat to win the Dickin Medal. The cat was Simon, mascot of HMS Amethyst, which ran the gauntlet of Chinese guns on the Yangtse in 1949. Simon was severely wounded by a shell burst during the action and died a few weeks after Amethyst returned to England.
