A NEW LABOR LEADER.

Melbourne, September 17.

In the Legislative Assembly to-day Mr. Elmslie, deputy leader of the Labor Party, announced that "Mr Prendergast had resigned the leadership. and that he had accepted the vacant positions" General admiration, he said, was felt for the energy and ability shown by Mr. Prendergast.

(Hear, hear.) He had rendered Parliament and the country great service.

The Premier (Mr. Watt) congratulated Mr. Elmslie on his selection for leadership. The personal' friendship between himself

and Mr.- rresádergast had not been des

i turbed by the fact that, they were said political opponents. (Hear, hear.) He was a full of admiration for the extraordinary inj dustry the hon. member had shown and a vigilant way in which in "Reason and our wet season he had followed every Bill into! duced. The work had told upon his health.

Mr. Prendergast said he would be pleased to get back to the rank and file. He had been leader of the party -about ten years,

i and thought it was "up to him" to give another man a chance. The Government, he j hoped would bear that idea in mind and I let the Opposition go over to the other side. (Laughter.) I
