LOXTON RAILWAY.

DEPUTATION TO THE GOVERNMENT.

A deputation, representing settlers at Tailem Bend and Loxton, waited on the Commissioner of Public Works (Hon. L. O'Loughlin) on Tuesday morning in reference to the proposed railway between Tailem Bend and Loxton. Mr. W. Senior, MR., introduced the deputation. Mr. R. Upton said they had come to support the proposal, as it would do a good deal in opening up that part of the country. Two years ago a deputation waited upon the Treasurer, and officers of the department were instructed to report upon the country surrounding Lox-ton and Tailem Bend. The country was carefully examined and the officers recommended that a railway line between Tailem Bend and Loxton be constructed.

The country was good for agricultural purposes. The residents of Murray Bridge had found out that Tailem Bend people would be benefited by the junction, and they wanted some of the pie." The settlers at Monteith- would be satisfied with a railway siding. At Tailem Bend the. people had everything necessary for the opening up of the proposed new railway. Mr. R/ Wacaton endorsed Mr. Upton's remarks. There was sufficient land at- Loxton for a large number of farmers. The land was worth £2 10/ per acre. Messrs. W. E. Cross and A. McDonald also spoke.

The Minister replied that he had not expected a deputation on this question, and did not think one was necessary. He thought there were not two opinions on the matter. The position of the junction had been fixed, but the trouble was that they had not decided how far the railway was to be continued
