PORT IMPROVEMENTS, A NEW HOTEL.

A decided acquisition to the architectural advancement to the Port of Fremantle is Mulcahy Bros. new National Hotel. This magnificent structure stands at the corner of High and Market streets, and has a frontage of about 75ft. to the former and

about 60ft to the latter street. It is four

storeys high, and has two balconies running the full length of the two frontages. The foundations are of Geelong bluestone, show 4½ft. above the pavement. The hotel con-tains about 60 rooms and is capable is ac-commodating 100 guests. The basement is taken up with cellars, storerooms, and the culinary department, while the ground floor is devoted entirely to bars, billiard room,

and private parlors. The ceilings are of stamped steel and the dadoes of burnished tiles. The house is supplied throughout with gas, and electric light fittingg have been installed in anticipation of the town being supplied with electricity, electric bells and speaking tubes have been placed wherever required, and lifts are arranged from kitchen to dining-room, and from bars, to commercial rooms. Every attention has been paid to sanitary details. Hydrants and hose are placed in convenient places in case of fire, while, if a conflagra-tion were to occur, an auxiliary staircase is available as a means of exit. To crown all, a splendid view is obtainable from the roof of the hotel, which is provided with a grated flooring, and hand rails all round. The fittings of the hotel are most elaborate, and when the hotel is thoroughly completed

it is to be furnished in a most complete and thorough manner. The hotel is to be under the management of Mr. Tobin. The Messrs, Mulcahy are the proprietors of the Commercial and Terminus Hotels also at the Port, the Central Hotel, Perth, and the Shamrock, Grand, and Metropole Hotels, Boulder City, and visitors to the fields for the opening of the Coolgardie water scheme are advised to pay these houses a visit.
