DEATH OF THE EX-QUEEN OF HANOVER

LONDON, January 10.

It was recently erroneously reported that the Duchess of Cumberland (Princess Thyra of Denmark) had undergone an ope-ration. The sufferer was not the Duke of

Cumberland's wife, but his mother, the ex-Queen of Hanover (Her Majesty Alex-andrina Maria, daughter of H.S.H. Joseph, late Reigning Duke of Altenburg). The lady was born on April 14, 1818, and was therefore nearly 89 years of age. She was operated upon at the Duke of Cum-berland's residence, Gmunden, Austria, and owing to her advanced age. anaesthetics were not administered. During and after the operation she endured intense agony, and on Wednesday she succumbed. The deceased was married on February 18. 1843, to George V., who was King of Hanover from 1851 to 1866. when he lost his crown through having taken part with Austria in the disastrous campaign against Prussia, The King died in 1878.
