CONCERNING PEOPLE.

Mr. Alexander McDonald, M.P., who on Tuesday wax elected Chairman of Committee* in the Tlouse of Ancmbry, repreamljwl Ow» T)iaf.rf»t nf Wnarlnnmi in the

House of Assembly from 1887 until that district was extended into the District of Alexandra, and ever since. He was born in 1849 at Hyland Park Distillery, Kirkwell, Orkney Islands, and arrived 'in the State in December, 1851, by the ship Ly-sander. At the age of 15 he went farming, an occupation in which he was engaged for five or six years. Then he served in the grocery trade in Adelaide for eight years, and subsequently opened a general store at Blackwood, where he still resides, lie was a member of the Mitcham District Council for several years. The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman was celebrated on July 21 at the residence of Mrs. H. C. Pitt, of Stansbury, the eldest daughter of the aged couple. Mr. Bowman is the fifth son of the late Edmund and Hannah Bowman, of Askhan, Westmoreland, England, and was born on June 18, 1829. He arrived at Mel-bourne in October, 1855, on board the mailboat Champion of the Seas. He was married to Miss Catherine Hooper, fifth daughter of the late Jacob and Catherine Hooper, of Cornwall, England, at Mintaro, on July 28, 1859, by the Rev. Caldwell. Mr. Bowman is now 80 years of age, and his wife is 72. Five sons, seven daughters, and 26 grandchildren are now residing at Maitland, Yorke's Peninsula. Lady Charles Fitzgerald, wife of Lord Charles Fitzgerald, of Riddell's Creek, Victoria (uncle of the present Duke of Leinster), died in a private hospital in Melbourne on Thursday. Her illness was comparatively riiort.Mr. Mr. Simpson Newland was re-elected President of the South Australian Zoological and Acclimatisation Society on Tuesday. Sir Lancelot Starting, who was on the original, council of the South Australian Zoological' and 'Acclimatization Society over 30 years ago, and Mr. J. H. Furiayson, for many years a member of the council, were present at tbe annual meeting -of the society on Tuesday. . ? ?' Our Charloville (Q.) correpondent wrote on July 21:— The Governor-General (Lord Dudley) will arrive* here at about the end of the present month for duck shooting at DiDaiah.
