BARONETS.

The title of Baronet has been conferred upon the following:— Sir Joseph C. Dimsdale, M.P., Lord Mayor of London. He was born in 1849,

and has been for several years managing director of tbe firm of Prescott, Dimsdale, and Co., bankers. He has represented the City of London in the House of Commons since 1900; and is Past Grand Treasurer of the Freemasons of England. He was Sheriff of London in 1894, and represented the City in the London County Council from 1895 to 1900. He was elected to his present office last year. Sir Francis Henry Laking, K.C.V.O., Physician in Ordinary and Surgeon Apo thecary to the King. He was born in 1847, and has been for several years consulting physician to the Victoria Hospital for Children. Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, K.C.V.O., the well-known yachtsman, who has made two unsuccessful attempts to secure the America Cup. Sir Thomas was born at Glasgow, and is of Irish parentage. He haa had a remarkably prosperous commercial career, and is now Chairman of the Lipton Proprietary, Limited. He is interested in several large tea estates in Ceylon. The King narrowly escaped serious injury last year while be was Sir Thomas Lipton's guest on board the Shamrock II., owiug to the collapse of the yacht's mast. Sir Frederick Treves, K.C.V.O., F.R.C.S., Sergeant-Surgeon to the King since 1901, who performed the operation on His Ma-jesty on Tuesday last. Sir Frederick was born at Dorchester on February 15, 1853.

He was appointed Consulting Surgeon to the forces in South Africa in 1900, and was rewarded for his services with a medal and three clasps. He was Surgeon Extraordi-nary to the late Queen. He is a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jeru-salem. Sir Francis Henry Evans, M.P., a di-rector of the Thames and Mersey Marine Insurance Company and partner in the firm of Messrs, Donald, Currie, & Co. He was born in 1840, and educated at Manches-ter. He represented Southampton in the House of Commons from 1896 to 1900; and was elected as the representative for Maid-stone at the last general elections. Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, M.A., Mus. Doc., Professor of Music ot Oxford since 1899. The new baronet is a director of the Royal College of Music

and Hon. Fellow of Exeter College, Ox- ford. He was born at Bournemouth on February 27, 1848. He is a voluminous writer on musical subjects, and has gained considerable reputation as a composer. Sir Edward John Poynter, R.A., Presi-dent of tbe Royal Academy since 1893. He has gained a world-wide reputation as an artist, while he also possesses great ar-chitectural skilL Born in Paris in 1836, be studied art in English and French schools under leading artists. He was ad-mitted as an associate of the Royal Aca-demy in 1869, and became a member of that institution eight yeara later. His first picture exhibited in the Academy was painted in 1867, and since that data be has exhibited on numerous occasions. He was knighted in 1896.
