SCHOOL CHILDREN TO

BE ISOLATED

Infantile Paralysis Case

at Maryborough

BRISBANE, February 6.

children of two classes at St

Michael's Convent infants' school, Mary-borough, will be isolated at home for three weeks because a six-year-old girl now declared to be suffering infantile paralysis was attending the school.

The Deputy Director of Health (Dr Coffey) said today that these were the

first school classes closed under the Government's policy. It had been de-cided that whenever a case was reported every child under 10 in the patients' house and every child in the same class at school be isolated. A Government nurse and the local inspector of schools would visit the home of the children to ensure that the isolation was not

broken. A fine of £20 was provided if children were allowed to wander in the streets.

The Sisters of Mercy in charge of St Michael's Convent also voluntarily closed two other classes at the infants' school to prevent any disorganisation

in routine. More than 100 children are affected.
