'THE REGISTER'S'- NEW PRINTING MACHINERY.

gathering of South Australians to witness the formal starting of the new three-decker Hoe machine, the purchase and erection of -which are the latest indications of the expanding needs of the newspaper establishment through -the rapidly increasing popularity of the journals issued from it. After the guests of the proprietors had inspected tlie latest printing appliance, the extremely powerful gas engine, with its hugs flywheel and corresponding gear, the Knickerbocker, which has turned out tlie papers speedily and effectively during the Just eight or nine year-?; and the Stanhope handpress, upon which the early numbers of ''The Register' were produced; the three-decker was started on its career by Miss Kyffin Thomas, representing the fourth generation of the family which has been associated with the proprietary of 'The Register' and its allied papers ever since their foundation. A 12-page number of ''Tlie Evening Journal' with specially attractive illustrations was issued in honour of the occasion, and a copy of this interesting .souvenir was presented to each of those who attended. i)iiring the morning the company, at the invitation of the proprietors, assembled in the spacious 'paper; store, where refreshments were provided and toasts. were honoured. Mr. R. Kyliin Thomas presided. Mr. W. J. Sowden proposed 'The Commonwealth iind the State of South Australia,' and tlie Hon. R. W. Foster, Commissioner of Public Works, and Sir Charles Todd, Deputy Postmaster-General, replied. The Hon. J. Vardon, M.L.C., tendered the toast of 'The proprietors of 'The Register' and prosperity to 'The Register,' ' and it was responded to by Mr. R. Kyffin Thomas on behalf of the proprietary. Mr..,K. Kyflin Thomas asked the company to drink to the health of the old surviving proprietors, and Mr. Joseph Fisher acknowledged tlie compliment. Tlie Hon. J. L. .Parsons, M.L.C., proposed the health of the chairman, and Mr. R. Kyffin Thomas returned thanks.
