U.K. filmdom in doldrums

London. — There is no doubf the British film industry is in the doldrums. The general story everywhere is that producers ore waiting to see what will be the Government's project to help the industry.

THE consequence is no plans — even if they are formulated—are being put into action. The Rank organisation has only five pictures in production, including 'Diamond City,' held up by illness of the star (David Parrar). Sir Alexander Korda is doing one film, 'The Third Man.' 'Train of Events' is the sole film on the floor at Ealing studios. Only encouraging word from the big three of British movies comes from Associated British, who hint at a big drive soon. The Archers team, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, who will make 'Gone To Earth' for David O. Selznick, are among the few producer teams in production. They've finished 'The Elusive Pimpernel,' and are off to Shropshire to catch the end of the hunting season for exterior shots before going to US for conferences with Selznick. ? * ? nECAUSE of Cory Grant's MJ illness, 'I Was a Male War Bride' has been packed up and will be finished in Hollywood. Ann Sheridan has already left, ? will ? take a holiday while Grant is recovering. . ? ? * T^IRECTOR Edward Dmytryk ?*-' and his wife are expecting their first baby in July. Mrs.

Dmytryk, the actress Jean Porter, has given up her engagement as star turn at the Embassy night club. They have gone on holiday to Switzerland, but Dmytryk must be back soon for recording of music for his 'Obsession,' the film he shot in the record time of 38i days. ? ? ? '\f R- Prohack,' Arnold Ben?aa- nett's story of a civil servant who inherits a legacy and later wishes he faadnt, will be the last film Ian Dalrymple, of Wessex Productions, makes for Rank.
