ADVANCED SCHOOL FOR GIRLS.

FAREWELL TO MISS M. REES GEORGE.

The Advanced School for Girls, one of the best known educational inutitutions in South Australia, ceased to be in 1908. The vitality of its traditions and the ex-

tent of its influence might be gauged from the fact that in spite of the lapse of time since its death the special gather-ing of the Old Scholars' Association on Tuesday evening filled the old schoolroom to overflowing, and drew letters and tele-grams from end to end of the State. The occasion was a farewell social evening in honour of Miss M. Rees George, the well-beloved ex-principal, who is leav-ing on a trip to England early In April. Miss George presided over the famous school from 1886 to 1908, when it was merged in the Adelaide High School. During her term of office she trained many of the best-known women in the State, and among those who gathered to wi'hIi her bon voyage were several leadinn women educationists. Miss C. E. Sella (President of the Old Scholars' Association) was in the chuir. She said that tho Advanced School for Girls lmd a very solid foundation upon nhicli a fine superstructure had been built. They had been fortunate in their head mistresses, Miss Staines (Mrs. Doudy), Mrs. S. Hubbe, and Miss M. Rees George. The lastnamed was known al through Australia for her educational work and her labours for the League of Empire, and they were proud of her fame. All her old pupils had for her the great-est love and respect. Mrs. S.Hubbe recalled the early days of the school and her own term as head mistress, paying a special tribute to the late Mr. W. Hartley, of whom the. ad-vanced school was a special pet project. It was Miss M. Rees George. she said, who gave the school its great impetus. Miss M. Rees George was then pre-sented with a travelling cushion and with a subscrnition of more than £10 towards the fund for a Capt. Matthew Flinders memorial to bo erected in Adelaide. She made a graceful speech of thanks. A musical programme was presented by Miss Maude Puddy. A.M.U.A., Miss Daisy Harry, and Miss Kathleen Powell. Supper was served.
