BOXING BERT McCARTHY DEAD INJURED IN BOUT I1ELBOURNE, Monday. After being unconscious since Saturday night Bert McCarthy, the former Australian featherweight boxing champion, died in the Melbourne Hospital to-day from a fractured. skull. McCarthy was knocked out by "Alby" Roberts, of New South Wales, in the eighth round of a 13-round fiiht at the Brunswick Stadium on Saturday. Roberts, who is an aboriginal welterweight, caught McCarthy in a corner, and he sent him down for the count or eight. McCarthy rase groggily and received another crashing right to the point of the jaw and fell unconscious for the full count. He failed to rally under medical treatment. McCarthy won the featherweight title on a foul from Bert Spargo in July, 1922, at the West:lMelbourne Stadium, and Spargo regained it -on, a points decision a month later.
