PHILIPPINES.

HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE.

MANILA, October 19.

A terrïfic tornado swept the islands of Cebu and Leyte on Wednesday.

Four hundred houses were wrecked at Cebu, and 2,000 at Leyte.

Four hundred persons lost their lives at Cebu. In both islands the hemp, sugar, and cocoanut crops were entirely destroyed.

The damage is variously estimated at from 11,000,000 to 25,000,000 dollars.

Cebu, is one of the Philippine islands, be-tween Negros and Bohol. it is inhabited by Visayans, and produces excellent coal. Leyte is a neighboring island.
