LARGE CROWD THRILLED BY SKATERS A FAST roller hockey match and a spectacular roller Derby thrilled the large crowd present at the Elphin skating carnival last night. The hall was beautifully -decorated with streamers, balloons and flags. A feature of the carnival was an exhibition of precision and rhythm. skating by the Elphin Skating Ballet. Skating versions of popular dances proved particularly pleasing. Miss Doreen Emms won a competition for the best-dressed woman skater. Events held during the evening resulted:Hockey.-Reds v. Blacks, a draw, three goals each. Teams were:-Reds: R. Davis (capt.), M. Easther, Rex Williams, Glynn Robinson and lI. Atkins. Blacks: George Haines (capt.), Trevor Bernal, Peter Trudgeon, K. Dickinson and R. Ryan. Goalstrikers-BLACKS: Bernal (3). REDS: Easther (2), Davis (1). Ten-step competition - Mr. and Mrs. T. Wilson. Tangoette --M.iss Lloyd and .Mr. Brown. V erznese waltz-Mr. and Mrs. T. WilsLa. Diane event - Miss Lloyd and Mr. Brown. Two-step --Mrs. Saville and Mr. Holmes. Skating to waltz time - Miss Doreen Emms and Mr. Hatton. Roller Derby - Dead-heat between Blues and Blacks. The man who wrote "Sonny Boy" and 500 other songs died on Tuesday. He was George (Buddy) de Sylva, former production chief of Paramount Pictures.
