It will bo noticed that Mr. Paterson headed the poll in five out of thc seven state electorates comprised within the divi-1 sion and Mr. Nelson in two. Thc electo-

rates carried by Mr. Paterson were Rock-1 'hampton, Rockhampton North, Fitzroy, 'Leichhardt, and Normanby; and those in which Mr. Nelson polled the greatest num-ber of votes were Clermont and Port Curtis.

It is impossible to say how many votes were polled by each electorate seeing that a voter was permitted to record his vote in any part of the division quite irrespec-tive of whether it was the part in respect of which he possessed > a vote ; but taking tho figures as given in thc tables, and accepting them as repre-senting the votes registered by thc electors of each electorate, adding to the Rockhamp-ton poll the votes recorded dn (Brisbane and Bundaberg, wo find that 7289 voters of thc 10,002 on tho rolls of the division, or sixtynine per cent, cast their votes. The following table shows the voters on the roll 'of each electorate, the number of votes re-corded, and the percentage of thc voters who exercised the franchise:

? .'With regard to. the informal votes-the number of which appears large; but which, qa a matter of feet, amount to very; little

more than two per cent of the votes castit, may too. mentioned that they 'include the twenty-nine votes (twenty-two for Mr. Paterson and seven for ¡Mr. Nelson) thai were polled at Rosewood. These votes, it. will be remembered, were rejected by Mr. Fairbairn because they did not bear the Initials of the presiding officer at thc polling station; but Mr. Fairbairn thinks it only just to thc officer in question to state that lie did hot receive his instructions from the returning officer for his electorate until the night before thc poll.
