ALTERATIONS AT YORK PARK Football Oval and Cycling Track The City Council contemplates extensive alterations at York Park, and the Mayor (Alderman A. E. Wyett) will invite representatives of the sporting bodies concerned to discuss the proposal with aldermen. If present plans are given effect to, the cycling track around the football ground will be discarded, and the playing oval moved closer to the spectators' pavilions. A new cycling track will be constructed at the southern end of the ground. The existing cycling track proved unsatisfactory to cyclists, while it is now also realised that it was a mistake to combine the track with the football ground. The ground is already too large and the track around it has served to increase the distance between spectators and the playing arena.. Before making a new lay-out the Council will hear the views of the sporting bodies so that no further mistakes will be made. Different Shape If the football ground is moved over to the fence in front of the pavilions the N.T.F.A. is anxious that it should also be re-shaped so that it will be less of an oval than it is at present, and the distance between the goal.posts will not be so great. The shape will be patterned on, say, that of the Mlelbourne Cricket Ground, and the main object will be to take the play as near as possible to the crowd, and to provide conditions which will favour the most spectacular type of football. Another suggestion which the football association will make to the council is that York Park should be better fenced. It is felt that under present conditions the association loses revenue through many people gaining admittance without paying.
