90 Years Ago From "The Examiner" Files, November, 1845 The Memorial in Favour of Priest-We publish the follow ing reply to the memorial re "ferred to in our last: "Sheriff's Office, 29th October, 1945,-Sir, I have the honour to acquaint you and the gentle men who signed the memorial, praying a mitigation of the sentence on Daniel Priest, that His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor has been pleased to accede to the prayer of the memorial, on the condition of transportation for life.-W. G. Sams, Under Sheriff." Execution. - This morning the last sentence of the, law was carried Into effect upon Gillan. The offence of which he was convicted was that of firing off his piece with intent to prevent his lawful capture. About a thousand people assembled to witness the spec-tacle; and the crowd, as usual, comprised men, women, and children. The wretched man seemed firm and resigned. He was in the prime of Iife about twenty-three years of age. Daniel Priest.-Priest was removed on Friday morning to Hobart Town by the coach, in custody of two con-stables. The sentence of death was communted (sic) to trans-portation for life, ten years to be served at Norfolk Island, whither he will be immediately forwarded.
