PERSONAL At a meeting of the Executive Council yesterday Mr. G. H. G. Smith, of Brisbane, was appointed extra-territorial justice of the peace for Tasmania. Mr. R. Copplestone was ap. pointed a member of the Licensing Court for Scottsdalo in place of Mr. Beattie (resigned). It is announced from London that Mr. Lambton Mount, who was thanked by the P. and 0. directors for his good work on the occasion of the sinking of the steamer China, blew out 95 candles on his birthday cake at a tea at which many Australians were present in London on Thursday last. Mr. Mount recalled Adam Lindsay Gordon, with whom he rode in Australia. OBITUARY MR. W. N. THOMSON, CORMISTON Mr. William Norman Thomson, 63, a prominent farmer in the Cormiston district, VWest Tamar, was found dead on Thursday morning. The Lody was discovered in a creek near his home. Mr. Thomson, who was a son of the late Mr. John Thomson, of Cormiston, was educated at the I.unceston Church Grammar School, and was well known in his early days as a footbailer and an athlete. He played with the Launceston, Railway and Fitzroy, Football Clubs, and won distinction in pedestrian events at various meetings in this state. His best performance was in, the quarter-mile at the Caledonian sports in 1896, when he defeated J. J. Moore and covered the distance in 48%sec., a Tasmanian record at that time. He was married and he leaves a widow and two daughters. There are six brothers-Messrs. IH. M. D. Thomson and J. R.'Thomson, of Launceston;, JT. D. Thomson,' B3. L. Thomson and i. R. Thomson, of Cornilston; and 'A. Thomson, of Victoria. The funeral will take place this morning, at 11 o'clock. 2 -
