DEATH OF MR. ALLAN

MCFARLANE.

A WELL-KNOWN PASTORALIST.

The death occurred on Wednesday even-ing at North Adelaide of Mr. Allan Mc-Farlane, the well-known and much re-spected pastoralist. The deceased gentle-man was in his eightieth year, and was a colonist of 69 years, having arrived in this State with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Allan McFarlane, in the ship Superb, in 1839, from Caithness, Scotland. His father settled at Mount Barker, and the de-ceased a few years later took over the man-agement of his father's property at Lake Alexandrina, of which he subsequently be-came the owner. Mr. McFarlane was one of the first to realise the danger of the rab-bit to the farming districts of the South-East, and straightway he took stringent measures to fight the pest. He made exten-sive improvements to his father's property, at Wellington East, where now stands one of the finest woolsheds in the State. He was everywhere recognised as an authority on stock of all kinds, and had been for many, years one of the judges of stock at the Adelaide Show. Mr. McFarlane was of a kind and genial disposition, and was exceedingly popular throughout the South-East. Almost ever since its inaugu-ration he had been a member of the Menin-gie District Council, to which he was re-turned unopposed at each succeeding elec-tion. He was an enthusiastic rifleman, and on one occasion won prizes at Wimble-don, in England. Mrs. McFarlane prede-ceased her husband, and the surviving mem-bers of the family are four sons and seven daughters. The latter are:-Mrs. G. A. Jervois, of Wellington station; Mrs. A. N.

Bowman, of Bathanga Park, Victoria; Mrs. M. S. Hawker, of Aldgate; Mrs. A. G. Lamb, of Sydney; Mrs. A. B. Henderson,

of Tourable, New South Wales; Mrs. E. Gordon, of Young, New South Wales; and Miss Agnes McFarlane, who is at present on a return voyage from England. The sur-viving sons are Messrs. Allan and Gordon McFarlane, of East Wellington, and Messrs. J. H. and D. H. McFarlane, of Young New South Wales). There are also 20

grandchildren.
