City's third Pile Light

?THl third Pile Light in 1 Brisbane's history will probably guide shipping into the port before the

end ot this month. The Harbours and Marine Department is now notifying mariners that a stationary flashing light will be operating at the entrance to the river soon. This light will be on the site of the 'Old' Pile Light, destroyed by the British tanker Wave Protector on October 17, 1949. USE OLD PILES The Portmaster (Captain It. Mastcrman) said yesterday the platform for the light, being fabricated in South Brisbane, would be ready in two to three weeks. Some of the steel piles from the old foundation were being used as a base for the new light. The light, using acetylene gas, would switch on automatically at nightfall. The stationary light would be unattended, and the signalling station maintained at Bishop Island since the accident would be continued. The 'Old' Pile Light was erected nearly 40 years ajro. An 'Older' Pile Light, to mark a former north channel up Moreton Bay is still standing. It was built last century.
