BRITISH POLL. MOST POPULAR STARS. James Mason and Margaret Lockwood. LONDON, April 24.--Nearly 600,000 cinema-goers, in the first national film award for British pictures, which was sponsored by the "Daily Mail," voted, firstly, that the best British film in 1939-45 was "The Way to the Stars," secondly that the leading actor in British films was James Mason, and, thirdly, that the leading actress was Mar-1 garet Lockwood. The order of voting for the films was "The Way to the Stars," "The Man in Grey." "Madonna , of the .Seven Moons," "They Were Sisters," "Henry the Fifth" and "This Happy Breed." The actress Margaret Lockwood led the voting from Phyllis Calvert, Patricia Roc, Rosamund John, Ann Todd and Celia Johnson. Miss Lockwood received 54,588 votes and Miss Calvert, 53,756. In the voting for the best actor, James Mason was followed by John Mills, Stewart Granger, Laurence Olivier. Robert Donat and Rex Harrison.
