A.B.C. CONCERTS. CHANGE ANNOUNCED. A Brilliant Conductor. SYDNEY, March' 10.-The .Australian -Broaddasting Commission haas"nnounced that Walter Susskind .win come" to-'Australia to conduct their orchestras during the 1946 conseason, the general manager of the A.B.C. (Lt.-CoL Charles Moses) stated yesterday. Mr. Moses said: ."We are fortunate to have. this brilliant young conductor, who was believed to be unavailable at the time-that the engagement of - Karl. Rankl was annodnced. When'Rankl was unable to come, we were successful in concluding negotiations with Susskind satisfactoily. This is the last of our major engagements for. this series. We shall now hate Susskind, a European , conducter and Eugene (loostns, an English.conductor ae-I presentative of America in music to conduct oir orchestras i the coming months.: Walter Sdsskind is now domiciled in London. By a happy coincidence his last concert in Landon.of'which we have news. by mail was at the Albert Hall when he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra : with Joan Hammond (another of our artists for 1946) as soloist." The. deputy director of'music for [the B.B.C. (Mr. Kennethr Wright) knew Susskind before the war in Pasgue as a promising young musieian and seeing his work in London during recentmonths he has written: "In the opinitfn of most people Suslkind is the best of the younger cinductors in this country. " He is first-class concert -and theatre conductor with an excgllent mapner so that his orchestras are as enhusiastic as his audiences." Susskind will fly, to Australia arriving in time to conduct the opening concert ofz.the season in the Sydney Town Hall on. Saturday, April 6, at- which Gualtiero Volterra, the noted Italian pianist will be soloist.
