Floodbird Nudges Home By Half Head In Poppy Day Handicap

MORPHETTVILLE.-So open was the Poppy Day Handicap of the , Port Adelaide Club meeting at Morphettville this afternoon that at bar-

rier rise Rabboni was favorite at 9 to 2, but once again he was beaten into second place. The 10 to 1 chance Floodbird finishing well in the straight, just got up in time to defeat Rabboni by half a neck, with Bronze Beau third. Floodbird was ridden by R. Carling, who rode his first winner for several months. He gave Floodbird plenty of time to settle down, with the result that the six-year-old gelding came home strongly.

STRONG FINISH

'THERE was a good field of mod1 erates in the first division of the

Armistice Stakes in which the threeyear-old Pennant gelding, Royal Pen-nant, finished strongly to defeat Trainbearer, with Allofus third. Royal Pennant, who started at S to 1, was better behaved than previous-ly, and he began as well as most of his opponents. He made up some lengths over the last half-mile, and in the straight, when Trainbearer ap-peared , to have the race won, came along strongly and won running away. The race was made to order fur

Trainbearer, Bastian riding ono of j

his good races, but Trainbearer was not good enough to defeat Royal Pen-nant. As usual Allofus came from a ' long way back to run home deter-

minedly, and in fiinshing fourth Sha-1 cune gave indications of early suc-

cess.

SUPERIOR CONDITION

CUPERIOR condition enabled

Springhead, who started at 9 to 4, to defeat Malachite and "Turf Prince in the "D" Day Jumpers' Flat. For the first mile Springhead was several lengths behind the leaders tucked in by the rails, but from thc half-mile post Elder rode him strong...\y, and Springhead answered his call

determinedly. He was wide out on the turn but he went on to win com-fortably by two lengths. Malachite came from a long wav back, but Turf Prince was always in the call,

SPECTACULAR RIDE

©TARTING at 6 to 4 on Chariot

made her opponents look like small fry in the Auraria Stakes, which was exclusive for three-year

old fillies, over a mile. Incidentally,

it was tin first time this semi-classic has been contested. Chariot's rider, R, Medhurst, rode a spectacular race on the filly. He was about five or six lengths behind the leaders half-way through the race. He moved up three furlongs from home, and when heads were turned for the run down the straight Chariot had the race won. As expected, Praiseworthy was second. Vimonette did fairly

well to run fourth
