Thousands Cheer Fordyce LONDON, Wed.-Thousands of backers at the best attended Ascot meeting since the war cheered the Australian jockey, Ted Fordyce, as he rode Pluchino in to an easy victory in the mud in the Ascot Stakes yesterday. Pluchino, whose owner had not previously won a race, drew level with Papillio at the entrance to the straight. When Papillio pulled away from the rails halfway up the straight, Fordyce sent Pluchino through the opening and he galloped on strongly to win-by six lthough the colt started at 100 to 7, he was a popular fancy. Bookmakers had offered 100 to 9 the field, with Money Legend and Gitano joint favourites. The Australian jockey, Edgar Brett, won the last event on the programme--the St. James Palace Stakes--on the 6 to 4 favourite, N?earula. Victory Roll was second and Masai King third.
