. VICEREGAL ENGINEDRIVER

NOT much harm can be done by waiting 50 years before the truth on certain matters is told. Mr. W. G. Lewis, an ex-loco, inspector,

writing me from Haslam on the West Coast, was reminded of this little entry in his diary on April 11, 1890:—"The first engine (R class) made by James Martin & Co., of Gawler. was taken delivery of and driven to Adelaide by the Governor, Lord Kintore. The bushes of the side rods were nearly all run hot and damaged, so much that most of them had to be renewed." Engine wasn't quite run in, was it?
