THE PREMIER PRAISED.

BOERS ON TOUR

London, September l8.

Burghers Jooste, of Klerksdorp and Rood, of

Ermelo, who have been touring Great Britain at the expense of the Government, with the objectiof inspecting farms and agricultural machinery, will leave England on September 23 for Canada, whence they will continue their journey to

New Zealand and Australia.

It is stated that the Boer generals will,

during the next few days, visit Antwerp, Brussels, and several Dutch towns.

The Peace Preservation Act, which gives Cape Colony control over the importation

and registration of arms and ammunition,

has now been gazetted.

In the Cape Assembly yesterday the debate was resumed on the resolution, moved by Mr. Merriman, leader of the Afrikander Party, in which he denounced the movement for the suspension of the Cape constitution and applauded the courage and firmness shown by Sir Gordon Sprigg, in his struggle for the maintenance of the autonomous privileges of Cape Colony.

Mr. J. J. A. Graaff thanked Mr. Chamberlain for the attitude of reconciliation he had adopted with reference to the con-stitution; and added that although Sir Gor-don Sprigg had the newspapers and capi-talists against him, he had behaved as a

great Englishman, and had upheld the British traditions.

The Hon. Jacobus W. Sauer rejoiced that a new era was dawning in South Africa, and that moderate Dutchmen and moderate Englishmen were combining to put the extremists in their proper ¡dace.
