RICHARD WATSON TO TEACH SINGING

Elder Conservatorium Appointment .

The Council of the University has appointed Mr. Richard Wat-son, at present in Australia with the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera

Company, to be a principal teacher of singing at tbe Elder Conservatorium.

Mr. Watson was born in Adelaide, bis father being a weil' - known solo bass singer in many oratorio performances under the late C. J. Stevens. In 1921 he became a student of the Elder Conser-1 vatorium, under the late Wlnslow Hall, and subsequently underClive Clive Carey. In 1925 he was awarded the Elder Scholari ship at the Royal College of Music, London, where he studied under

W. Johnston-Douglas. Later he | was with the celebrated Dlnh Gilly., After leaving the Royal College.! and tfae position of bass soloist at Westminster Abbey, he was principal bass with the Covent Garden j Provincial Opera Company, and worked for some years under Barbirolli, Goossens. Beecham, and Coats. In the international seasons he sang Kothner ta "Der Meistersinger" and principal roles in "Pelleas" and "La Boheme." | In oratorio, Mr. Watson ap-j peared under Sir Edward Elgar, Sir Ivor Atkins. Sir Hugh Allen, and Dr. Malcolm Sargent, and was also associated with BBC operatic productions and recitals. He will take up duties at the Elder Conserva-Itorium ta April. The position was previously held .by Mr. Harry Wotton, who died 'this year.
