Dot Laughton Retires Happily

Top ranking sports-swoman in this State for the past 19 years. Mrs. Dot (C. W.) Laughton, will

be missing from hockey ranks for the first time in that period tomorrow. She says she can think of no happier reason for re-tirement — a six-weeks-old daughter, Janet Irene. International cricketer, world record batswoman, all-Australia hockey and tennis A grade player, and former schoolgirl basket-baller. Dot Laughton's achieve-ments in the sports field must rank her among the world's best in the amateur sports field. She began her outstanding sports career 26 years ago when she was chosen for the State schoolgirls basketball team. Her record-making cricket career began in 1934, and the following year she also took up hockey. Dot Laughton has scored 40 centuries in first class women's cricket and in 1949, in an asso-ciation semi-final, she made her world record score of 390 not out. She has led the State cricket team and toured England with the all-Australia women's team in 1951. Her hockey exploits include selection as left full-back in the Australian team for New Zealand (1947). She holds her State A badge for umpiring.
