Yesterday's maximum temperature was 76deg. and the minimum was 56.5deg. The fire hazards assessed by the Weather Bureau for today are: Jarrah area, moderate summer, karri area, moderate summer. Bridge Closed. Belhus Bridge, across Ellen's Brook, on the West Swan-road, has been closed to vehicular traffic. The bridge, which was built about 50 years ago, is now unsafe. A spokesman for the Swan Road Board said last night that the bridge had not been built to carry the heavy traffic of recent years. He recommended that north-bound traffic should use the Great Northern-highway through Midland Junction. Butchers' Picnic. No meat will be sold in the metropolitan area on February 19, when all butcher shops and bacon factories in the metropolitan area and the Midland Junction abattoirs will close, so that members of the Meat Industry Employees' Union can attend their annual picnic. The secretary of the union (Mr. J. W. Baker) said yesterday that about 800 were expected to attend the picnic, which would be held at Garden Island. Careless Shots. Complaints are being made by farmers in the York district of indiscriminate shooting on properties adjacent to the main roads. There have been several incidents involving the loss of sheep. Some offenders are believed to be residents of the metropolitan area who motor to the district to shoot rabbits without first having secured permission from propertyowners. The York police intend taking action against offenders. Aircraft Flares. Eight bomb-shaped steel cylindres, which were found on Monday afternoon in thick scrub near the old Naval Base. army camp, were identified yesterday by Army experts as 22 lb. aircraft flares. The objects were found by a picnic party near Naval Base-road and were at first thought to be a type of military flare. A flare picked up by one of the party burst into flames and burnt for about 15 minutes. After they had examined the flares yesterday the experts set them off. By Three Votes. A loan referendum by which the Wanneroo Road Board sought to gain permission to raise a loan of £ 5,000 for improvements to the Wanneroo showground reserve was defeated by three votes on Saturday, the secretary of the board (Mr. W. Rees) said yesterday. The board had intended to use the money to install waterreticulating- plant and fencing on the eight-acre reserve, as well as a display shed. A year ago £1,800 was spent in bulldozing the area, which was now ready for grassing.
