Two Women In Honors List

Two knighthoods have been con-ferred on South Australians in the Birthday Honors, announced yester-day. The Chief Secretary (Mr.

McEwin) has been made a KBE, and the Lord Mayor (Mr. Arthur Rymill) a Knight Bachelor.

Honors have also been conferred on 14 others, including two women, Lady Bonython and Mrs. Edith Alice Mehrtens. The announcement from Government House says:— His Excellency the Gov-ernor is informed that Her Majesty the Queen has been pleased to confer the fol-lowing Birthday Honors in SA:— Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire The Hon. Queen's Police Medal Inspector (First Class) John Joshua Turnbull. Minister Sir Lyell McEwin has been Chief Secretary, Minister of Health and Minister of Mines in the SA Cabinet for 15 years. He has been a member of the Legislative Council for nearly 20 years. He is an able adminis-trator, and during his term of office has given valuable assistance in improving and enlarging health and hospital services. He is Leader of the Government in the Legis-lative Council. Sir Lyell McEwin repre-sented SA at a Common-wealth Parliamentary Con-ference in NZ. and has three times been Acting Premier. He has represented the State at many interstate conferences, including Premiers' Conferences, Loan Council meetings and hospital meetings. Sir Lyell McEwin is also keenly interested in rifle shooting. He is chairman and a life member of the

National Rifle Association of SA, and he represented his State in 1925-27. Sir Lyell McEwin has a farming property at Blyth. Before he became a Minis-ter he took an active part in local public affairs. He joined the Agricul-tural Bureau at Blyth in April, 1920, and was secre-tary and president of the branch for many years. He was appointed a member of the Advisory Board of Agriculture in 1930, and was chairman between 1935-37. He re-tired in 1939, and was made a life member of the board nine years later. Lord Mayor Sir Arthur Rymill is in his fourth term as Lord Mayor. He was admitted to the Bar in 1930, and in private life is a barrister and solicitor and company director. He is chairman of direc-tors of the Bank of Ade- laide. First elected to the Ade-laide City Council in 1933, Sir Arthur Rymill has served as chairman of the council's Finance and Par-liamentary and By-laws Committees. He is also a member of the board of the Adelaide Children's Hospital. Enlisting in the Second AIF as a private in 1940, he was commissioned into the Royal Australian Artil-lery but had his appoint-ment terminated, through an injury received in an army vehicle. Subsequently he was re-presentative of the Red Cross and Skipper, Royal Naval Auxiliary Patrol. He drove the winning speedboat Tortoise in the Australasians Unlimited Speedboat Championship in 1933, and represented SA at polo from 1938 to 1951. Sir Arthur Rymill was chairman of the Citi-zens' Committee of the Royal Visit. As Lord Mayor he pre-sented the Address of Wel-come to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and was their host at the Royal Garden Party. Long Service Dr. Hurtle Thomas Jack Edwards (CMG) has given outstanding service to the dental profession in SA. Dr. Edwards was one of the founders and most active members of the Australian Dental As- sociation and was Fed-eral president in 1933. On many occasions he has acted as State presi-dent of the Australian Dental Association and he was a member of the Den-tal Board from 1925 to 1945, during which period he was president from 1939 to 1945. He was a member of the University Faculty of Dentistry from 1924 to 1951. During World War I. he served in the Dental Corps from 1915 to 1918. Dr. Edwards has been actively associated with the teaching and examination staffs of the University of Adelaide and the Adelaide Dental Hospital since 1921. In 1949 he was appointed honorary consulting dental surgeon in the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was one of the earliest presidents of the Dental Students' Association.
