This compared with . .89 males 'and four females at the same date last year. Most of the male unemployed were in the labouring class and were over 40 years of age. Navy Recruitnag Measue. As from October t a permanent member of the- Royal Australian Navy who is responsible for the enlistment of a recruit will receive a "capitation" allowance of 1I, An announcement from the Naval Board, Melbourne, said yesterday that the scheme applied only to men below commissioned rank. It is hoped that the measure will accelerate recruiting. College Legey. The University Women's College has received its first legacy in the form of £200 from the estate of the late Amy Enid Saw, widow of the late Dr. A.J. H. Saw, a former chancellor of the University. The seeretary of the college council (Mrs. E. M. Watson) said yesterday that the late Mrs. Saw was a foundation member of the committee set up in. 1928 to raise funds for establishment of the college. Male "Malon." Victoria's first male "matron" has begun duty at a private hospital at Mildura. He is Mr. A. W. Moran, who was a sick berth attendant in a naval ntisubmarine ship during the war. Ife was registered as a qualified uarse after his discharge from the navy in 1947 and received approval from the State Health Department to conduct his 12bed hospital. It,is one of the two private hospitals in Mildura. He is now in charge of two sisters and four female nurses, and the sisters say that they have never worked in a liappier hospital.
