CIRCULAR LETTER ISSUED BY THE

COMMITTEE.

Melbourne.

SIR,-I am directed by the committee ap-

pointed at a public meeting of the inhabi-tants of Port Phillip, held here on the 19th cur-rent, for the purpose of considering the best means of alleviating the distress now existing in Ireland and the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, to send you the annexed copy of the resolutions adopted, and the subscription paper ordered to be prepared by that meeting, and to request your earnest aid and co operation in furtherance of its

views.

The dreadful visitation which it has pleased Almighty Providence to inflict on the inhabitants ofour native land, by the destruction of their principal article of food, and the appalling des-titution which has followed, by which tens of thousands are suffering ni1 the horrors of famine, and hundreds are dully perishing from actual starvation, are facts unfortunately too well known to require any proof from the committee. It is hoped that a mere reference to these facts is a sufficient appeal to induce all persons to give every assistance in their power towards al-leviating the sufferings of the distressed Irish

and Scotch.

In considering the modes by which this relief can be best bestowed, you will observe that the meeting has left it at the option of each subscri-ber to direct his subscription to be applied either for the immediate relief of the sufierers by eleemo-synary aid, or by providing with a free passage to this distnct as many as the funds subscribed for that purpose will allow.

A district committee has been appointed for the purpose of carrying out in your neighbourhood the benevolent intentions of the meeting, and as that committee will doubtless shortly place itself in communication with you, I feel assured that a cordial co operation will lake place among the settlers and others, and a large sum may be raised for the relief of our famishing fellow countrymen

I am also directed to make an earnest appeal to your generosity and benevolence in behalf of the famine-striken population of Ireland and Scotland Scenes of fearful destitution, disease, and death, of which no pen can convey an adequate idea, are of daily ociurrence. lamine is ruling the lund with a rod of iron, carrying dreadful suffering and loathsome disease into all the habitations ot the perishing peodle, and surelj, placed as we are, in a land where plenty is running down our streets, and fruitful seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness, it is not too much to ask that subscriptions for the relief of the sufierers should he as large as the subscribers' circumstances will

allow.
